Chehrazar, Antique Khamseh tribal rug, 1920s, 6’9 x 9’10

Khamseh is a term that refers to a confederation of tribes. A rug of this size would have migrated with the tribe many many times during its creation - over the course of several years. This one is absolutely full of symbols and ornamentation. Every time you look at it, you see one that you didn’t see before! Khamseh rugs are higher quality tribal rugs. Tribal rugs are quite often wonky due to their wool foundations but this Khamseh is in unusually good shape! Rugs of this type were made almost exclusively in - 4x6 to 5x8 sizes and this one is a bit bigger, 5’9 by almost 10 feet, making it all the more special.
