This is a spectacular Turkmen Lebab Saryk chuval, 4th Quarter 19th C from the Amu Darya region. This piece was originally attributed to the Tekke tribe, however, upon further exploration I learned that despite the color similarities to Tekke pieces, the knot structure is consistent with Saryk work from the Amu Darya region.
A chuval was a bag or suitcase of sorts that hung from the walls of the Turkmen tribe's tents or yurts. These beautiful bags held their belongings. This is actually what’s called the “bag face” or the hand knotted decorative front of the chuval. The backing has long been removed. This collector's piece would be perfect for hanging on the wall - a nod to its original placement as a wall hanging. It also is fantastic as a rug! This bag face was finely knotted, the rug itself is quite thin. If using as a rug, get a thick felted rug pad. Wool pile on wool foundation. The fringe is a bit wild, but it has been secured along the back with a piece of fabric to prevent further unraveling.
