The dyes in these really old rugs are made of plants - vegetables, roots and flowers and also inspects! This madder red is one of the most famous 'reds' in oriental rugs and it can be found in every possible shade from pink to deep, deep red. The color actually comes from the Madder plant root which is aged, dried, ground into a powder and then soaked and steeped. The reds can vary based on where the plant was grown, at what point it was harvested, the recipe used in the dye as well as what mordants were used (this makes the dye permanent). Dying wool is both science and absolute art!

This rug is unique in that it's a bit bigger than a typical yastik and would be great to start your own collection :)
